Page-a-Day Comic Challenge

Tue Sep 30, 2008, 8:42 PM
Not that I'm proposing this as a challenge to anybody, but more like a challenge that I'll be taking on. It's also part of a personal project and what better way to get it moving than forcing myself to draw a page of it per day?

That's right. For the next 31 days (including today Oct. 1st) , I will be drawing One page per day of a "graphic novel" that I've been brewing in my brain for a few days now. These pages, sadly, will remain black and white and may look a bit sketchy, but that's all I can afford to do since I'm juggling work, life and (currently the only flagship title) Inamorata-Incognito ( [link] )

Another thing about this comic is that I can't guarantee that it will be entertaining, since I'm not much or a story writer, but it'll be great practice as far as comic-making goes. It would be great if ya'll would read it and give your much-appreciate thoughts on it (not on every page, mind you, just whenever you feel like it.)

So what's the story gonna be about? essentially, about the girls; Tatiana, Brandi and Vera. Just kind of random stories pertinent to their lives which will eventually play an important role in their story lives. I can tell you right now that I'm working on Tatiana's then moving on to Brandi's and then to Vera's. Of course its going to tell you a bit about the girls themselves so I guess it'll serve as an important exposition-type mechanism?

Already I can tell you that it's going to take more than a month to finish all the stories even updating everyday, but I promise to update everyday for this month at least and finish the story up (with the updates varying but hopefully frequently) Well, it's midnight right now when I'm writing this, but I will upload something by today. anyway, Hope I does good!

I've been meaning to do something similar, but with one page a week...

I'm not doing great with time these days, but I'll check it out, and try to leave a comment :D

Hi, my name is Tanna and I'm an emotoholic...

I've been checking and im pretty sure i've seen page up for a day eh? XD;; Was wandering if i could get a few tips for colouring from you? I've tried my hand at it recently, but to no avail. Main issue is color selection. Would also like to hear how you blend! :D

as you already know, I usually work with 3/4 tones at a time (unless I get fancy) and those are flat, shadows hilights, so when I do flats, I pick my colors usually leaning on a neutral side, so it's not gray, but its not bright peach (for skin tones)

so as far as choosing colors go, add a little gray to the color of choice, that way, the picture won't look like a pokemon cartoon. (stupid bright-ass colors)

as far as blending goes, just use the pressure sensitive brush and the alt key shortcut to blend.

if you're going with a realistic thing, I may hafta show you instead of typing it up here... it's harder to explain. anyway, i hope this helps a bit.

Mmkay, so a fairly simple set of tones - even for skin? How do you create a decent contrast within shadows if you're only using 3/4 tones? My main issue within colour selection lies within the picture as a "whole". Ie, The color of the clothing or shade of skin really doesn't match the background's color at all.

Regardless, i figure most of it shall come within practice of it and everything. I was thinking of doing some rough sketches, and coloring them properly without a background, taking less time but still practicing coloring - whatcha think?

Cheers btw :P

This is me and my lack of art-ness speaking, but obviously, the tone of the shadow is gonna be determined by the overall tone of the bg, for example, if the object/person is inside a forest, the shadow's are going to have a greenish tone. that may sound hard, but yeah, a little green on the grays and blacks.

there's also the matter of light, indirect light and reflective light, right? light obviously makes the surface it reflects off of lighter, indirect light (the way I do it) tends to take the hue of the bg, so like a greenish glow (going back to the forest example) and reflective light would be the light bouncing off of the object itself and then reflecting again from another part of the object/person's body. I'll just draw you something, see if I can actually apply what I just typed in and show you. All of this of course is an overly-simplified study that i've done. I have hours and hours of studying to do if I want to get any better.

if you're gonna do a simple sketch and color, do it, I highly recommend it. But I also recommend filling the backgrounds with a simple bg, or a solid color and try to work on tones from that too. Practice ain't a bad thing ever... on the good things, anyway.
:iconpolicat:
I can comprehend most of that. Never really thought about some of the color being reflected from the background and other surrounding surfaces. I realised that if something has a light of its own, such as a glow, of course it'll reflect onto the person. But what you said is very interesting, i'll remember that fo-shizzle.

Thanks again, i'll be sure to keep alot of that in mind, hopefully i can surprise you with an awesome cg'd piece sometime. Till later man.
